Morocco Unveils Three School Reopening Plans as COVID-19 Concerns Persist

Thursday 27 August 2020, by Jérôme

The Moroccan Minister of National Education Saaid Amzazi is categorical: there will be no postponement of the school start given the unpredictable development of the epidemiological situation related to Covid19.

The school start will take place, the government official affirmed on Wednesday during a meeting of the Education, Culture and Communication Commission in the House of Representatives. Three models have been prepared in anticipation of the 2020-2021 school year.

The first provides for the adoption of face-to-face teaching in the event of a normal epidemiological situation. The second is self-teaching in the event of a worrying evolution of the pandemic. The third scenario concerns the alternation between the first two models, Saaid Amzazi specified.

The minister described as "wise" the proposal of his department to alternate the two models of teaching, face-to-face and distance, in the sense that it takes into account all the constraints, particularly for working parents and families without internet or computers.

"We have the possibility of adaptation according to the situation in all the regions as the provincial directors and the academies are mobilized for all the scenarios," he assured, noting that the educational models prepared take into account the evolution of the pandemic. It is about collectively facing the epidemic with a sense of responsibility from each position, he observed.

It is not just pedagogical decisions, but the management of a crisis in relation to the preservation of public order, in coordination with the health and security authorities.
