Morocco Unveils Prison Suicide Prevention Guide to Improve Inmate Rehabilitation

The guide for the prevention of suicide, suicide attempts and attacks on physical integrity in penitentiary institutions was presented last Thursday in Rabat.
This guide is the result of a collaboration between the Danish Institute Against Torture and the General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration (DGPAR) for the period 2017-2019 in accordance with an agreement signed between the two parties. Its publication is part of the project aimed at transforming prisons into a space for introspection, inmate rehabilitation and their useful reintegration into society, reports Hespress.
According to the Head of the Social Protection Division at the DGPAR, Toufiq Abtal, the publication of this guide now provides the institution with a mechanism to help employees identify potential suicide cases in order to contribute to their reduction.
According to the head of the social protection division, the publication of this guide comes before the signing of a second renewal agreement for the implementation of the project to prevent suicide and attacks on physical integrity in penitentiary institutions.
The guide is based on security and retraining approaches for the purpose of better protecting the physical and mental integrity of inmates. It also aims to develop the staff’s ability to identify people at risk.
