Morocco Unveils Plans to Extend High-Speed Rail to Marrakech, Boosting European Connections

During his participation in the fourteenth edition of the "InnoTrans" trade fair in Berlin, Germany, Mohamed Rabie Khlie, the Managing Director of the National Railway Office (ONCF), presented Morocco’s strategy to consolidate its position as a leader in the railway sector at the regional and continental levels.

Speaking at the opening session of the "InnoTrans 2024" trade fair, dedicated to railway transport and mobility technologies, Khlie declared, in the presence of the Moroccan Ambassador to Germany, Zahour Aloui, that "Morocco, thanks to the ambitious projects launched under the wise leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, has risen to the rank of reference among intermediate economies".

The Managing Director of ONCF mentioned the project to extend the high-speed train line to Marrakech, specifying that this project "will make it possible to connect the tourist capital of the Kingdom to the gateway to Europe in only two hours and 45 minutes". Other railway projects are also planned in the Kingdom and will contribute to attracting many foreign investors.

Khlie also presented the 8 billion dirham development plan for the railway sector, which includes, among other things, the implementation of local transport projects and the purchase of new trains to renew and modernize the current fleet. The official also shared with his German counterpart, Richard Lutz, the Moroccan experience in the field of artificial intelligence, data protection and cybersecurity.

In addition to ONCF, Morocco is represented at this trade fair by the MTI Cluster, which brings together several Moroccan and foreign companies operating in the sector. Organized every two years, the InnoTrans trade fair is being held this year from September 24 to 27 in Berlin. Some 2,940 exhibitors from 59 countries will present 226 global innovations in the field of transport on this occasion.
