Morocco Unveils $20 Million Emergency Aid Package for Struggling Press Sector

The government has just announced the release of 200 million dirhams (MDH) to help the press, which is facing an unprecedented crisis due to the coronavirus epidemic.
The Minister of Culture announced the implementation of this emergency plan this Friday, before the Education, Culture and Communication Committee of the House of Representatives. He also said that before this decision, a meeting with professionals in the print media sector made it possible to take stock of their difficulties. To this end, an emergency plan has been drawn up with the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Administration Reform, to save the print media.
Four essential measures make up this action plan, informs La Map. First, the allocation of an amount of 75 MDH, for the payment of salaries for the benefit of press companies for the months of July, August and September. Then, there is the mobilization of 75 MDH, for the payment of suppliers of press companies. Then, 15 MDH are intended for printers who have a contract for more than 500,000 copies.
Finally, there is a direct support of 15 MDH to Sapress which is facing difficulties related to the economic situation, in addition to a state recapitalization of 10 MDH. It should be noted that aid of 15 million dirhams will be granted to private radio stations.
