Morocco Unveils Locally-Made ICU Bed, Cutting Import Costs by Up to 75%

The prototype of a 100% Moroccan-made intensive care bed was presented on Thursday evening in Casablanca, in the presence of the Minister of Industry, Trade, Green Economy and Digital, Moulay Hafid Elalamy. This project is the result of a public-private partnership.
It is a bed with a metal structure, with an electronic part, designed and manufactured in nine weeks in Morocco, in accordance with international safety and performance standards and at a competitive price. This Moroccan bed is 30% to 75% cheaper than what is imported from abroad, Mr. Elalamy said proudly, adding: "These products that we import in foreign currency can now be made with national currency and especially with Moroccan labor."
This pioneering project, which is the result of a collaboration between the Ministry of Industry, Trade, Green Economy and Digital and Moroccan laboratories and industrialists, allows Morocco to meet the challenges of the new coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic in a context of shortage of this type of bed in several regions of the world and possibly to supply other countries in Africa.
Idriss Elasri, CEO of Altran in Morocco and MG2 Engineering, said he was "very pleased" to have contributed to the development of a new model of intensive care bed that can be produced locally from components and materials available in Morocco.
Now the concern of the promoters of this technology is the development of an industrialization strategy based on locally manufactured components.
