Morocco Unveils $1 Billion Plan for New Highways and Expressways

Minister Abdelkader Amara presented on Monday to the House of Representatives the road projects of his ministry, including the Fez-Taounate expressway.
With a total cost of 4.6 billion DH, this is a project scheduled to be executed in 2021-2022. Among the ministry’s road projects, there are also the Tetouan-Chefchaouen, Salé-Sidi Allal El Bahraoui expressways, over a length of 20 km, the northeast bypass expressway around Agadir of 45 km, and the one connecting Nador and its port "Nador West Med" (35 km).
There is also the El Hajeb-Errachidia-Rissani expressway, which will extend over 380 km for a budget envelope of 5.7 billion DH and the Ourika tunnel connecting Marrakech and Ouarzazate at a total cost of 10 billion DH.
Abdelkader Amara stressed that Morocco has a network of 1,334 km of expressways currently open to traffic. A length of 739 km is under completion, including the Tiznit-Laâyoune roads over 550 km and Tetouan and Chefchaouen.
Similarly, the ministry has started studies for the construction of 812 km of highways at a cost of 47.1 billion DH. These include the Beni Mellal-Fez-Meknes highway (226), the Beni Mellal-Marrakech highway (180 km) and the Guercif-Nador highway over 105 km.
