Morocco Unveils $11 Billion Earthquake Reconstruction Plan for Affected Regions

Following the devastating earthquake that struck six provinces in southern Morocco two weeks ago, killing nearly 3,000 and injuring more than 5,500, the Royal Cabinet announced on Wednesday a provisional budget of 120 billion dirhams (about 11 billion euros) for reconstruction. This amount will benefit the 4.2 million people affected.

The announcement was made during a meeting chaired by King Mohammed VI. The five-year reconstruction program targets the regions of Marrakech, Al Haouz, Taroudant, Chichaoua, Azilal and Ouarzazate. It includes initiatives to restore infrastructure, rebuild housing, boost the local economy and support employment. In addition, emergency reserve platforms, including tents, food and medicine, will be set up in each affected region.

During this meeting, the king emphasized the continuous listening to the needs of the local population. He stressed the importance of environmental preservation, while respecting the heritage and traditions of the regions concerned.

The financing of the program will come from the state budget, contributions from local governments, the Special Solidarity Fund for Earthquakes, as well as donations and international cooperation.
