Morocco is preparing to build a total of 15 dams, at a rate of three per year, for the period 2017-2021. This announcement was made official in the House of Representatives by the Head of Government, El Otmani, during his monthly intervention.
These announced dams are, according to El Otmani, part of the implementation of the provisions of the government program and the royal high instructions. The Prime Minister did not fail to point out that the Government has built 10 small dams, in order to meet the needs of the rural world in drinking water, but also for irrigation and groundwater supply.
Moreover, El Otmani returned to the continuation of the studies relating to the water transfer project from the North to the Center. At this level, the Head of the Executive has emphasized "the search for modalities and sources of financing", as well as the diversification of water supply sources, not to mention the encouragement of the mobilization of unconventional water resources.
For the Government, renewable water resources are estimated at 22 billion m3/year, or 18 billion m3 of surface water and 4 billion m3 of groundwater.
In addition, the Head of Government made a point of defending Morocco’s water policy. According to him, it is essentially based on the mobilization of surface water resources, through the realization of infrastructure projects allowing the storage of water, in times of abundance.
By anticipating in this way, the Government is keeping itself away from the many risks related to water scarcity.
