Morocco Unveils Ambitious 2020 Privatization Plan to Boost Economy

The Moroccan government plans to launch a new wave of privatizations as early as 2020. This is at least what the Finance Bill, tabled before the parliamentarians, provides for.
Morocco has announced the color through the sale of a stake on the Stock Exchange of the state in the historical telecommunications operator, last summer. This new wave of privatizations is recorded in the 2020 Finance Bill.
According to the newspaper Aujourd’hui le Maroc, the Government’s announcement comes in a context marked by a higher increase in commitments and expenditures than in revenues. Worse, Morocco will no longer receive donations from the Gulf.
Among the entities to be privatized, there are, among others, La Mamounia in Marrakech and the Tahadart Power Plant. These disposals will have the advantage of lightening the debt burden for certain public institutions in critical situation.
The Government is also counting on the proceeds from privatizations and on the repayment of VAT credits to try to give the country’s economy new colors.
