Morocco Unveils Ambitious 2020 Infrastructure Plan to Boost Foreign Investment

[Morocco] intends to launch major highway, rail and port infrastructure projects in 2020, in order to improve the attractiveness of the country and its various regions to foreign investment.
It is planned for the year 2020 the realization of the highway link with the new port of Nador West Med at a cost of 4.5 billion dirhams (MMDH) as well as the construction of the Casablanca bypass highway over 31.5 KM, indicates the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Administration Reform in its 5th note on the regional distribution of investment 2020.
The rail network will be expanded this year through the continued implementation of the rail connectivity projects of the Nador West Med port (3 MMDH) and the port of Safi (300 MDH) as well as the completion of the preparations for the program contract between the State and ONCF.
In the maritime field, the construction and extension of port and maritime infrastructure, as well as coastal protection works, can be noted.
On the social level, several projects aimed at continuously improving the population’s access to basic services (roads, health, education, water, electricity, etc.) will be carried out, particularly within the framework of the implementation of the Program to combat territorial and social disparities in rural areas.
Significant amounts have been allocated to the continuation of the development program for the southern provinces, the overall budget envelope of which is around 80 MMDH as part of the implementation of the new development model for the southern provinces, it is specified.
Regarding the issue of the impact of public investment at the regional level, six regions benefit from about 67% of the national GDP, the ministry said, noting that the regional distribution of investment in 2020 is structured around five axes.
