Morocco Unrest Sparks Travel Warning as GenZ Movement Shakes Nation
Belgium recommends that its nationals visiting Morocco avoid the areas where the Moroccan youth movement "GenZ 212", with more than 180,000 members on Discord, is organizing protest gatherings.
In Morocco, demonstrations have been taking place since September 27 in several cities, at the call of the Moroccan youth movement "GenZ 212" to demand better public health and education services, employment and social justice. The gatherings have spread to other cities in the kingdom.
The death at the public hospital in Agadir of eight pregnant women admitted for caesarean sections is at the origin of the triggering of these unprecedented social demonstrations by their spontaneity. The unrest has resulted in 3 deaths and 400 injuries across the country. Isolated incidents of looting and arson have been reported in some cities.
Belgium, which is following these events, recommends that travelers follow the news, strictly comply with the instructions of the authorities. It also invites them to avoid the places where demonstrations are taking place. "In order to better organize consular assistance, we advise you to register your trip via Travellers Online," can be read in the notice published on the Belgian diplomacy website.
