Morocco Tsunami Fears Unfounded, Experts Say: Sea Retreat Normal

The rumor of the installation in the coastal cities of evacuation signs in case of tsunami, as well as the recent dissemination of videos on social networks showing the retreat of the sea, have raised concerns among Moroccans who fear the imminent occurrence of a natural disaster.
Moroccan experts reassure: the probability of the occurrence of a tsunami is extremely low. Nasser Jabbour, director of the National Institute of Geophysics of the National Center for Scientific and Technical Research, stated that the retreat of the sea is a normal and predictable phenomenon that occurs at defined periods, and that the current situation on the Moroccan coasts should not raise concerns.
Houssein Youabed, head of the communication service of the National Meteorology, said for his part that the weather forecasts do not indicate any imminent threat. In a statement to the daily Al Alam, he explained that the panels placed on the beach of the city of El Jadida are part of the "Tsunami Preparedness" project, implemented by the Chouaib Doukkali University with the financial support of UNESCO. It aims to raise awareness and prepare the population for the occurrence of any disaster.
The experts called on citizens not to believe the rumors circulating on social networks and to rely on information from official sources, urging them to remain calm and serene.
