Morocco’s Tourism Sector Surges: Foreign Exchange Up 16%, Hotel Stays Double

At the House of Representatives, Fatim-Zahra Ammor, Minister of Tourism, Handicrafts and Social and Solidarity Economy, communicated figures from the tourism sector that confirm the recovery.
The 2 billion dirham (MMDH) emergency plan, implemented in partnership with industry professionals, has borne fruit. Fatim-Zahra Ammor’s intervention shows that the sector has recorded 93 MMDH in foreign exchange, an increase of 16% compared to 2019. As for the number of overnight stays in hotels, it reached 19 million (MDH), which represents an increase of 192% compared to 2021. As for domestic tourism, it represents 42% of overnight stays, compared to 31% before the Covid-19 pandemic.
This year, good performance is still on the agenda. Tourism revenues reached 25 MMDH in the first three months of 2023, an increase of 51% compared to the same period in 2019. The first four months of the year recorded 4 million tourist arrivals, an increase of 19% compared to 2019.
With the new roadmap for the tourism sector, developed through a participatory approach, Morocco intends to maintain the course. It plans to invest 6.1 MMDH to attract 17.5 million tourists by 2026, reach 120 MMDH in foreign exchange earnings and create 200,000 direct and indirect jobs.
