Morocco’s Tourism Revenue Plummets 62.7% in Early 2021 Amid Ongoing Travel Restrictions

Over the first five months of 2021, tourism revenues in Morocco decreased by 62.7% compared to a 30.6% drop in 2020. This is the picture presented by the Directorate of Studies and Financial Forecasts (DEPF) in its recent economic note.
This new level reached is due to the 68.8% drop in the first quarter of 2021 and a 22.8% decline in the first two months of the second quarter of 2021, according to the DEPF. As for the added value of the tourism sector, following a 7.6% drop in Q1-2020 and 57.7% in Q4-2020, a 50.3% decline was recorded in the first quarter of 2021. A rate which translates into a 78.1% drop in tourist arrivals at the end of March 2021, i.e. -90.3% for foreign tourists and -57.6% for Moroccans residing abroad, specifies the DEPF, stating that overnight stays in classified establishments also fell by 70.1%, i.e. -90.6% for non-residents and -19.9% for residents.
However, with the gradual reopening of national borders since June 15 and thanks to the exceptional measures deployed as part of the Marhaba 2021 operation, the tourism sector could see gradual changes in the coming months.
