Morocco's Tourism Industry Faces Uncertainty as Losses Mount to 34 Billion

While their activity has partially resumed, hoteliers and other tourism operators have no visibility on the future. The decisions of the Economic Monitoring Committee (CVE) and the Ministries of Tourism and Finance are slow to be made.

Salaries, income tax, social security contributions, Damane Relance credit for tourism and hotels... The coronavirus has had a negative impact on the tourism sector. According to l’Économiste, 9,000 entities including 3,500 classified tourist accommodation companies, 500 tourist catering companies, 1,450 travel agencies, 1,500 tourist transport companies and 1,500 car rental companies are hit hard by the health crisis.

The tourism sector is recording a loss of 34 billion for the entire sector, including 15 billion for hotels, the same source specifies. Faced with this gloomy picture, tourism professionals are demanding exemption from social and tax charges (income tax, CNSS, ...) for 12 months for active companies that maintain 80% of their workforce as well as the implementation of a specific mechanism for the preservation of employee income.

For now, the CVE and the Ministries of Tourism and Finance have not yet made the decisions that are needed to relieve the pain of tourism professionals. Enough to make them impatient.
