Morocco’s Tourism Boom: 135 New Hotels Open as Sector Attracts Billions in Investment

The tourism sector is a source of wealth and employment in Morocco. At the end of June last year, Tourism Minister Fatima Zahra Ammor stated that tourism contributes 7% to the gross domestic product (GDP) and generates 2.5 million direct and indirect jobs.
According to official data published by the Ministry of Tourism, 135 new hotel units started their activities in the kingdom in 2023 thanks to investments of around 8 billion dirhams. During the first half of 2024, the Moroccan hotel sector attracted investments of 4 billion dirhams, an increase of 7% year-on-year, the same sources indicate.
The Moroccan government signed a framework partnership agreement in March 2023 to establish the strategic roadmap for the tourism sector with a budget of 6.1 billion dirhams for the 2023-2026 period, aiming to attract around 17.5 million tourists, achieve a turnover of 120 billion dirhams and create 200,000 new direct and indirect jobs by 2026. It aims to reach 26 million tourists in 2030, the year it co-hosts the World Cup with Spain and Portugal.
In a statement to the Al3omk site, economist Mohamed Jadri indicated that the State has set up the "Cap Hospitality" program 2024-2025 to support the acceleration of the modernization of classified tourist accommodation establishments with a loan ranging from 3 to 100 million dirhams, repayable over 12 years including a grace period of two years.
According to data from the Ministry of Tourism, 7.4 million tourists visited Morocco in the first six months of 2024, an increase of 14% compared to the same period in 2023, and 38% compared to 2019. In June, 1.5 million tourists entered the kingdom, an increase of 10% compared to 2023. The summer season looks promising.
