Morocco's Top Islamic Body Urges Ramadan Safety Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, which has already caused 149 deaths in Morocco, the Supreme Council of Ulema recalled on Tuesday that the preservation of life against all dangers takes precedence, from the point of view of Sharia, over any other act, including gathering for supererogatory prayers and the Sunnas of worship.

The Supreme Imamate, Imarat Al Mouminine, is concerned about the protection of our lives first and the fulfillment of our religion second. It also watches over the health situation in the kingdom, as it is concerned about reopening the mosques when the conditions are met within the framework of the return to normal life, specified the Supreme Council of Ulema in a statement.

According to the same source, the provisions of Sharia require compliance with the order of the Imam of the Ummah and following his advice and guidance. It also emphasizes that acts of worship to Allah, whatever they may be, are not deprived of rewards in case of inability to perform them, whether they are obligatory acts, such as Hajj, or various authorizations dictated by Sharia. To these actions are added the actions motivated by a sincere intention but practically impossible to execute among the acts of the Sunnah, including the Tarawih and Eid prayers.

With the doors of the mosques closed, the Council recommends replacing the Tarawih in the mosques with prayer at home, individually or collectively, with family members, without taking risks. From the point of view of Sharia, group prayer is that performed by more than one believer, it is reassured.

Furthermore, the Council notes that the invocation of the principle of acceptance of Allah’s destiny would protect against any feeling contrary to the aforementioned provisions, calling to turn to Almighty Allah and implore Him to remove the evil and avert the misfortune. Also, the Council has called on Moroccans to respect the barrier gestures in order to limit the spread of the virus.
