Morocco’s Tomato Exports Surge to Record $990 Million, Dominating Produce Market

Moroccan tomato exports have recorded a considerable increase, reaching record figures during the 2022/2023 agricultural season.
Between July 2022 and June 2023, Morocco exported a total of 716,700 tons of tomatoes to international markets for $990 million, according to the latest data published by the specialized portal EastFruit. Over the past five years, Moroccan tomato exports have increased by more than 25% and recorded the highest growth rates over the past decade.
Tomatoes currently dominate Moroccan fruit and vegetable exports, accounting for nearly a third of the total during the 2022/2023 season. This product is also among the 10 most exported by Morocco. In its latest annual foreign trade report 2022, the Moroccan Foreign Exchange Office indicated that tomato exports accounted for 2.4% of the total in 2022, an increase of 35% compared to a year earlier.
Morocco has managed to diversify its customer base in recent years and now supplies tomatoes to 44 countries, compared to 24 countries just six years ago. In one year, exports to Denmark and Austria have doubled and those to the Czech Republic have tripled. Despite diplomatic tensions, France remains the main importer of Moroccan tomatoes, with 49.5% of the total in 2022, an increase of 18.4% compared to 2021, allowing the kingdom to earn 5.153 billion dirhams.
With 21% of total exports in 2022, the United Kingdom is in second place, bringing Morocco 2.182 billion dirhams. In third place are the Netherlands, with 11.8% of the total, an increase of 70.5% compared to the previous year, for a value of 1.224 billion dirhams. Spain is the fourth importer of Moroccan tomatoes with 8.3%, an increase of 20.5% compared to 2021, for a value of 859 million dirhams. With these figures, Morocco became the third largest exporter of tomatoes in the world in 2022, behind the Netherlands and Mexico, and ahead of Spain.
