Morocco Tightens Election Oversight: Candidates Under Scrutiny to Prevent Voter Fraud

Several candidates running for the September 8 elections have been placed under surveillance by the special commissions of the Public Prosecutor’s Office. The aim is to fight electoral fraud.
The initiative is a provision provided for in Article 108 of the Penal Code, in order to monitor any attempt to use money to win over voters.
In the big cities, special commissions are responsible for closely monitoring the major candidates, reports the daily Assabah, which points out that the phones of several of them have been tapped by the justice system.
It should be recalled that more than 4,500 observers have received the approval of the Special Commission for the Accreditation of Election Observers, in preparation for the upcoming electoral deadlines scheduled for September. Nearly 70 international observers representing some 14 international NGOs and two international parliaments will be present in Morocco to verify the holding of the elections.
