Morocco Tightens COVID-19 Restrictions Amid Rising Cases and Summer Travel

Since Friday, July 23, new preventive measures have come into force in Morocco. These are restrictions related to night travel, travel between prefectures and provinces, as well as family celebrations which are now prohibited. The aim is to fight against the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a press release, the Ministry of Health stressed that the restrictive measures do not mean the return of a total lockdown, even if the strong presence in the country of Moroccans residing abroad and the resumption of economic and tourist activity are convincing factors.

Professor Chakib Abdelfattah, a specialist in infectious diseases at the Ibn Rochd University Hospital in Casablanca, told Hespress that "the purpose of the measures taken by the government is to reduce the number of Covid-19 infections that the Kingdom is experiencing".

He indicated that the authorities are doing everything necessary to prevent the country from falling into a health relapse. "The virus is dangerous and is a nightmare for many countries whose health systems have collapsed... While in Morocco the situation is still under control," he added.

He also stressed that "Moroccans ignore the seriousness of the virus which is spreading very quickly. It is essential to restrict travel and certain activities in order to avoid the collapse of the health system". He specifies that the "silent" danger requires raising the state of alert to overcome the current situation.
