Morocco Tightens Border Controls to Curb Currency Smuggling

The increase in the arrest of people with large sums of foreign currency at the Tanger-Med and Sebta borders has alerted the authorities, who have just strengthened the controls.
To this end, a circular has just been sent to all agents of the Customs and Indirect Taxes Administration (ADII), reports the newspaper Al Massae, calling on them to be more vigilant during border controls.
The newspaper recalls that several people have been arrested in recent weeks at Tanger-Med with large sums of foreign currency, citing the example of this Moroccan residing in the Netherlands, who was apprehended in possession of 12,000 euros, which he intended to transfer out of Morocco. This sum was taken from him and he will soon have to answer for its origin before the courts.
In addition to scanner monitoring, police and customs officers are invited to individually check each traveler and vehicles to neutralize any currency trafficking, the same source specifies.
In Morocco, it is strictly forbidden to export currency without the written authorization of the Office des Changes. Moroccans are, however, authorized to do so, for a certain annual amount, without notifying the institution.
