Morocco’s Telecom Giant Pays $330 Million Fine to COVID-19 Relief Fund

The 3.3 billion dirhams fine imposed on Maroc Telecom has been paid into the Special Fund against Coronavirus, created to limit the spread of this virus that is wreaking havoc in the world and in Morocco.
This amount paid is the fine imposed in February last by the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (ANRT) on Maroc Telecom. This means that the Special Fund for the management of the COVID-19 crisis, created just a few days ago by King Mohammed VI, is equipping itself with the means to achieve the objectives it has set for itself.
The Special Fund, with an initial provision of 10 billion DH, is intended for the expenses of upgrading the health and medical system. This Fund will also allow supporting the economy, through various measures proposed by the government for the preservation of jobs and vulnerable sectors. Also, this Fund will make it possible to support the consequences of COVID-19 on the various sectors of activity.
To recall, it was the anti-competitive practices and the slowdown in the process of unbundling the local loop by the public company, which led the ANRT to put Maroc Telecom on notice and to condemn it to the payment of this fine.
