For two years, the teenager’s breast tissue had increased rapidly and excessively. At 15 years old, measuring 1.60 meters tall and weighing 62 kilos, she suffered from juvenile gigantomastia, a rare anomaly that appears during puberty.

This extreme growth caused chronic lower back pain, postural disorders, and significant difficulties walking or performing daily activities. The young girl had also isolated herself socially due to her discomfort and deteriorating body image.

Examinations conducted by the endocrinology team revealed no hormonal abnormalities. The exact cause of the disease remains poorly understood, but excessive sensitivity of breast tissue to estrogen is regularly cited.

According to the study published in the Journal of Surgical Case Reports, doctors removed a total of 16.5 kilos of tissue: 8.5 kilos from the right side and 8 kilos from the left side. This volume represented approximately 27% of the teenager’s body weight and places this case among the most significant ever described in a patient of this age.

Seven Hours in the Operating Room

The procedure lasted seven hours. Its magnitude resulted in significant blood loss and hypovolemic shock, forcing doctors to perform a transfusion and place the teenager under intensive care monitoring during the first night.

By the week following surgery, the patient no longer experienced back pain. Her mobility had improved significantly, as had her psychological state.

A complication subsequently appeared with partial necrosis of the nipples and areolas, meaning deterioration of tissues insufficiently irrigated. Surgeons waited seven months before performing reconstruction using a skin graft taken from the groin area.

Eight months after the procedure, doctors report satisfactory functional and aesthetic results. Analysis of the removed tissue showed no signs of cancer.

Long-term follow-up remains necessary, as new growth can occur due to future hormonal stimulation. The medical team also emphasizes the importance of psychological support for adolescents facing this physically disabling and particularly difficult disease.
