Morocco’s Tax Chief Omar Faraj Retires Amid Major Reform Efforts

Despite a waiver from the Head of Government, Omar Faraj, Director General of Taxes, has chosen to retire in a context marked by a major tax reform, which is being led by the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
Omar Faraj, 62, no longer heads the Directorate General of Taxes. Although he had benefited from a two-year additional waiver granted by the Head of Government, he has left his position to retire, reports TelQuel.
Omar Faraj is this former State Domains official who is leaving during a period when the vast tax reform project that the Ministry of Economy and Finance has embarked on, through the Tax Conferences, is continuing. This personality has also taken an active part in this endeavor.
In 2015, this senior official had been appointed to the Directorate General of Taxes. In this position, he worked for the digitalization of the tax authorities. He also strengthened controls, which generated a 97% increase in revenue from these controls over the 2015-2018 period. They had indeed disrupted traditional practices at the level of certain liberal professions.
