Morocco tanks vs Spain Leopards military comparison

Morocco has on paper a much larger tank fleet than Spain. Faced with this numerical advantage, Madrid highlights the modernity of its Leopards, their homogeneity and what is considered simpler logistics.

The figures cited by La Razón attribute 1,346 tanks to Morocco, of which 808 would be immediately available. Spain would have 298 according to Global Firepower, while Spanish official data mentioned by the newspaper puts this total at 327.

These estimates are therefore not perfectly comparable, but they confirm Morocco’s clear numerical advantage. The kingdom would notably have approximately 380 American Abrams, over 50 Chinese VT-1A, nearly 350 M60 Patton and some 130 T-72.

Spain responds with quality

Spain has a smaller fleet, but concentrated around a single model. Its army aligns 219 Leopard 2E manufactured and adapted in Spain, as well as 108 Leopard 2A4, some of which are kept in reserve.

The Spanish media estimates that this homogeneity constitutes an important advantage for maintenance, crew training and spare parts supply. Conversely, the coexistence of American, Chinese and Soviet equipment would complicate Moroccan logistics.

Madrid also plans to modernize its armored capabilities and strengthen the active protection of its tanks. The comparison therefore does not come down to the number of vehicles: their actual condition, their ammunition, their crews and available support means would be decisive.

Morocco clearly dominates the figures, but Spain assures that its Leopards allow it to maintain a technological advantage. A conclusion defended by the Spanish newspaper, which mainly seeks to put the spectacular gap between the two fleets into perspective.
