Morocco’s Tangier-Med Port Set to Become Global Shipping Hub, Maersk Reports

Morocco will become one of the largest transshipment hubs in the world in the coming years, said the Danish shipowner, A.P. Moller-Maersk. This will be achieved thanks to the addition of the APM Med-Port terminals, with a capacity of 5 million TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units), at the Port of Tangier-Med.
Now at the forefront of African ports, the Port of Tangier-Med is also among the 50 largest container ports in the world. This ranking is due to its prized location along the main maritime trade routes and the increase in its freight flow to and from Africa, noted the Danish giant in a press release. This feat is the source of GDP growth of 4.1%, with positive prospects for containerized imports and exports.
The agreement between the Danish shipowner A.P. Moller-Maersk and the Port of Tangier-Med has been strengthened with a new investment of $800 million for the construction of new APM Med-Port terminals.
For Morten H. Engelstoft, CEO of APM Terminal, his company ensures a fruitful partnership with Morocco. He is also pleased with the use of this second container terminal of the Tangier-Med port complex. In his eyes, the APM Med-Port Tangier terminals represent an important link to best serve its customers and, in turn, to boost global trade.
