Morocco Takes Helm of African Union’s Peace and Security Council

Since Sunday, September 1st, Morocco has been chairing the Peace and Security Council of the African Union. In this position, the Kingdom intends to have a lasting impact on the continent over the next 12 months.
Since Morocco’s return to the African Union (AU), the Kingdom, which has been elected a member of the Peace and Security Council for a two-year term, is presiding over this permanent decision-making body for the prevention, management and resolution of conflicts for the first time.
The Kingdom will have the opportunity to concretize the royal vision of common African action in the field of peace and security, an essential condition for the sustainable development of the continent, guaranteeing the dignity and prosperity of the African citizen," said the Permanent Representative Ambassador of the Kingdom to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA-UN), Mohammed Arrouchi, in an interview with MAP.
In this position, Morocco is ambitious. It intends to mobilize against a number of phenomena, including climate change, transitional justice, the fight against terrorism and violent extremism. In addition, it plans to work for the reform of the security sector in African countries, the peace-security-development interdependence and mediation, the same source specifies.
Moreover, the Kingdom, which will chair the first Council meeting in September on Tuesday, September 3rd, is also concerned with preserving African unity and solidarity through clarity, objectivity and impartiality, putting the interests of Africa and the African citizen at the heart of its concerns.
This is actually a priority of the Moroccan Sovereign, which he recalled in his speech delivered at the African Union Summit held in January 2017 in Addis Ababa. At the time, King Mohammed VI had emphasized that the action of his Kingdom would contribute to uniting and moving forward. During this Council presidency, Morocco will be the main interlocutor of the pan-African institution in the field of peace and security with other partners.
