Morocco Takes Action to Protect and Repatriate Citizens in Crisis-Hit Libya

Morocco remains concerned about the fate of Moroccans in Libya, especially those who are arrested and imprisoned as they try to reach Europe. Urgent measures have been taken to remain in contact and facilitate their repatriation.

Questioned in parliament on the subject, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, assured that the Moroccan community residing in Libya benefits from special attention from the government. The Moroccan and Libyan authorities regularly inform each other in order to be reassured about the conditions of those among them who have chosen to remain in Libya after the repatriation campaigns carried out by the ministry, following the outbreak of the Libyan crisis, he specified.

The same system has been put in place for the arrested Moroccan migrants, he added. "The Moroccan Consulate General in Tunis is in constant contact with them, and laissez-passer are issued from time to time for those that the Libyan authorities release once their Moroccan identity is confirmed," he said.

And to emphasize that the treatment they receive from the Libyans "is an acceptable treatment, contrary to what some social media are promoting." To date, the identity of 250 detainees has been confirmed, and laissez-passer have been issued to them, available at the Consulate General in Tunisia, pending the resumption of flights between Morocco and Libya, the minister concluded.
