Morocco Suspends Prison Visits Amid COVID-19 Surge and New Variants

Faced with the surge in Covid-19 cases, the prison administration has decided to suspend, starting next Monday and until further notice, family visits for inmates of penitentiary institutions.
In a statement published on Friday, the General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration (DGAPR) indicated that this measure is taken, due to the latest developments in the epidemiological situation, following the remarkable increase in the number of coronavirus infections due to the emergence of new highly contagious variants.
A decision aimed at "preserving the health of inmates, officials, visitors and users", the same statement points out.
In recent weeks, the number of cases has risen exponentially. According to official figures, on average, just over a hundred new cases per day were recorded over a seven-day period, then a thousand the following week, and more than 6,000 this week.
