Morocco Surpasses Spain as EU’s Second-Largest Tomato Supplier

In 2022, Morocco became the second largest supplier of tomatoes to the European market, ahead of Spain. The kingdom has increased its tomato exports by 71.33% over the past ten years, while the Netherlands and Spain have reduced them by 25.22% and 28.42% respectively.
For the first time in history, Morocco has overtaken Spain in terms of tomato exports to the European Union (EU) market in 2022, according to the report carried out by Hortoinfo based on Euroestacom (Icex-Eurostat) statistical data. Over the past ten years, the Netherlands has exported the most tomatoes to the European market, with 861.18 million kilos in 2013, closely followed by Spain with 717.86 million kilos. For its part, Morocco has reduced the gap with Spain, until ousting it from second place and approaching the figures of the Netherlands.
In 2022, the Netherlands remained the leading supplier of tomatoes to the EU market, with a volume of 644.01 million kilos, 217.17 million kilos less than in 2013 (−25.22%), for a value of 1.28 billion euros (1.99 euros/kilo), compared to 1.06 billion euros in 2013 (1.23 euros/kilo). Morocco comes in second with 558.27 million kilos of tomatoes sold (+71.33%) compared to 232.42 million kilos in 2013. Spain, for its part, has moved to third place, with a volume of 513.84 million kilos, 204.02 million kilos less than in 2013 (−28.42%).
Despite this drop in terms of tomato volume, the value of Spanish tomatoes increased by 126.31 million euros compared to 2013 (+15.57%), from 811.36 million euros (1.13 euros/kilo) to 937.67 million euros (1.82 euros/kilo). France occupies the fourth position with 212.59 million kilos, i.e. 391.84 million euros less than in 2013 (1.84 euros/kilo), followed by Turkey with a volume of 187.12 million kilos, i.e. 220.17 million euros less than in 2013 (1.18 euros/kilo).
