Morocco to Supply 8% of UK's Electricity via 3,800 km Undersea Cable

Ryad Mezzour, Moroccan Minister of Industry and Trade, assures that Morocco will provide the United Kingdom with 8% of its electricity needs as part of the project to build a 3,800 km submarine cable connecting Morocco to the United Kingdom.

During a recent visit to London, the Moroccan official stressed the importance of the XLinks energy project, which will connect Morocco to the United Kingdom, with the participation of the Saudi energy giant ACWA Power. The project aims to provide about 8% of the electricity to the United Kingdom from Moroccan production, and to secure nearly 7 million British households with low-cost electricity by 2030, thanks to four direct submarine cables spanning a distance of more than 3,800 kilometers, he detailed in an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat.

Over the years, Morocco has established itself in the production of renewable energies. It is a country with "enormous" potential in this area. "We do not have a large stock of hydrocarbons, so we have sought our competitive advantage in renewable energies. Today, we are among the top three countries in the world producing renewable energies, with Chile and the west coast of Australia," said Ryad Mezzour, adding that the kingdom has committed to an energy mix to produce electricity. "Our goal is to produce 52% of our electricity from renewable sources by 2030," he added.
