Morocco Summons Energy Officials to Parliament Over Soaring Fuel Prices

At the request of some opposition political parties, officials from the energy, hydrocarbons and electricity sectors have been summoned to the House of Representatives this Monday, April 4, 2022 at 11am for a working session on the surge in hydrocarbon prices and the situation of the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE).
The meeting is an initiative of the Commission on Infrastructure, Energy, Mines and Environment, following the request made on Thursday, March 31, 2022 by the opposition political parties in order to study the reasons for the surge in prices on the domestic market.
Among the officials summoned are Leila Benali, Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Amina Benkhadra, Director of the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM) as well as Abderrahim El Hafidi, Director General of ONEE.
In the request addressed to the President of the Commission, the opposition parties explain that the surge in hydrocarbon prices has "constituted another blow to the purchasing power of Moroccans already deteriorated due to the high prices of a number of food items in addition to the low rainfall and the vestiges of Covid-19. This negatively affects the economic and social situation of a large part of Moroccans."
