Morocco's Summer Travel Plans to Europe in Doubt Amid COVID-19 Restrictions

After this health crisis, will Moroccans still be able to travel abroad?

Like other African and Middle Eastern countries, Morocco is hard hit by this covid-19. To date, 3,568 cases of contamination have been recorded, nearly two months after the registration of the first case of covid-19.

Faced with the authorities’ determination to contain the virus, this exit of Moroccan tourists from the kingdom would be impossible. Morocco, from the appearance of the first case, took a number of measures to counter the covid-19 pandemic. One of the first measures that helped reduce foreign contact cases was the cancellation of international flights to and from Morocco. The other measure that also received unanimous support was the confinement imposed through the state of health emergency.

All these measures decided by Morocco are also in force in other countries often visited. On the side of certain European countries, the time is for deconfinement. This is the case of Denmark and Austria on Tuesday, April 14. For the time being, no one knows what the entry conditions on their territory will be in the medium term. No precise timetable has been announced.

Moreover, it is even suggested that the lifting of internal EU border controls should be coordinated, and priority is given to cross-border workers and seasonal workers. The reopening of external borders, the closure of which has been extended until May 15, should be done in a second step.

In the meantime, questions about air traffic persist and no one knows at what pace flights will resume. If domestic flights will be the first to take off, international flights should be impacted in the longer term. The only choice left for Moroccans is to revisit their country, after deconfinement. And industry professionals are just asking for that.
