Morocco’s Sports Retail Boom Threatened by Growing Informal Market

In the booming sports sector in Morocco, the informal sector is gaining ground. Professionals, dissatisfied, are sounding the alarm.
"The enthusiasm for sport, whether practiced in fitness centers, outdoors or at home, continues to grow in everyday life," reports the weekly La Vie Eco, specifying that "this segment is invading shopping hubs, which are diversifying their offerings to better reach consumers." The sports goods market is experiencing this rapid evolution due to several factors, including "the establishment of specialized stores and companies distributing international sports brands," explains Alaâ Mrani, an expert in sports economics and organizational strategy.
However, the prices charged in these stores are not within the reach of all budgets. As a result, consumers with low purchasing power, but in search of branded items, turn to the informal sector where prices are affordable. "A difference that exceeds 50% of the price compared to products sold in approved stores," the weekly points out. A situation that angers professionals who call on the competent authorities "to put in place strict laws and standards to fight fraud and counterfeiting."
