Morocco-Spain Underwater Tunnel Project Advances with Experimental Dig Planned

The project of a tunnel under the Strait of Gibraltar, connecting Morocco to Spain, continues to progress. Nizar Baraka, Minister of Equipment and Water, presented the latest advances of this titanic project to the Moroccan Parliament on Tuesday.
An experimental underwater tunnel will soon be dug. The objective: to precisely analyze the technical and geological challenges of this exceptional project. For the minister, it is crucial to determine the optimal route, favoring the areas least exposed to tectonic constraints. With an estimated length between 27 and 30 kilometers, the tunnel will require in-depth studies to guarantee its stability.
Aware of the magnitude of the task, the Moroccan government has decided to step up its efforts. All the data collected since the start of the project are in the process of being digitized, adding that the most modern information systems are being used.
A complete diagnosis has been carried out, efficient archive management tools have been acquired and the databases have been updated. A new cooperation agreement was even signed in April 2023 with the Center for Transport Studies for the Western Mediterranean (CETMO).
Next step: updating the regulatory systems of the Moroccan (SNED) and Spanish (SECEGSA) companies in charge of the project, and the creation of a joint technological complex. A procedures manual will also be developed to ensure optimal coordination between the two countries.
