Morocco-Spain Tunnel Project Advances Ahead of 2030 World Cup

The project to connect Morocco and Spain by tunnel in the Strait of Gibraltar is progressing. The two countries are stepping up the pace to complete the infrastructure before the 2030 World Cup, which they are co-hosting with Portugal.

The Moroccan-Spanish Joint Committee should meet shortly in Tangier, during this month of June, to address the various aspects of the project, reports El Debate. The National Society for the Study of the Strait of Gibraltar (SNED) of Morocco and the Spanish Society for the Study of Fixed Communications across the Strait of Gibraltar (SEGEGSA) will present on this occasion a detailed action plan for the period 2024-2026.

According to SNED, the plan includes the restructuring and modernization of the working methods of the two study companies; cooperation with national and international scientific and technical institutions and institutes; exploration of underground geological formations through land and sea reconnaissance campaigns; determination of the tunnel route and its facilities; the social, economic, environmental, strategic and legal study of the project, according to international standards; initiatives to strengthen the position of the project at the local and international levels.

The 2024-2026 action plan will allow the project to move from the study phase to the implementation phase. To recall, the Morocco-Spain tunnel project under the Strait was reactivated in April 2023, during the High-Level Meeting held in Rabat. It was first mentioned in 1989 and consisted of the construction of a bridge to connect Africa to Europe. This option will be abandoned in 1995 in favor of a 38.7-kilometer-long railway tunnel, 27.7 kilometers of which will be underwater.
