Morocco Slips in Global English Proficiency Rankings, Now Among "Very Low Skill" Countries

Moroccans are poor in English. This is the finding of the latest ranking published by the English Proficiency Index (EPI), in which Morocco ranks 76th, placing it in the group of "countries with very low skills".
This year, the Kingdom scored an average of 47.19 points, compared to 48.10 in 2018. While globally, Morocco has seen a decline in performance, it has maintained its position at the regional level, ranking 6th, just behind Tunisia (5th) and Egypt (4th).
Globally, English-speaking countries have not underperformed. South Africa is ranked 6th in the world and becomes the leader at the continental level, followed by Kenya, which is 18th in the world. Just behind Kenya is Nigeria (3rd) in Africa and 29th globally, far ahead of Algeria, which is ranked 90th.
And this score is not expected to improve in the future. Earlier this year, the Moroccan Minister of Education, Saïd Amzazi, stated that French would remain the second language after Arabic in Moroccan schools.
He also ruled out any possibility of replacing the English language with French. Even though, according to his remarks, scientific books are much more available in English than in French and more in French than in Arabic, he believes that for now, French should remain the language taught in the education system.
