Morocco Slips to 66th Place in Global Energy Transition Rankings

Morocco ranks 66th out of 115 countries in the 2021 ranking on the energy transition index, losing 15 places compared to the last ranking. The energy transition index measures the current level of performance of the energy system in 115 countries around the world.
According to the World Economic Forum (WEF), the kingdom has achieved 57% in the field of energy transition. Regarding the sub-indicators, it obtains 64.9% in terms of energy system performance and 48.7% in the index of readiness for a safe and sustainable energy transition.
In the MENA region, Morocco is outpaced by Qatar, the regional leader, and the United Arab Emirates. However, it outperforms Jordan and the Sultanate of Oman by 8 points. In the Maghreb, the kingdom maintains its supremacy over Algeria (79th global rank) and Tunisia (88th). Mauritania and Libya are absent from the ranking. On the African continent, the kingdom ranks fourth, behind Ghana (56th), Namibia (59th) and Kenya (61st). At the global level, Sweden remains in first place. It is followed respectively by Norway, Denmark, Switzerland and Australia. On the other hand, Venezuela, Lebanon and Mongolia occupy the last places.
After identifying three major essential elements intended to boost energy resilience, WEF in its 2021 report, calls on states to "accelerate progress towards the transition and halve emissions by 2030 to stay on track and achieve the Paris Agreement goal".
The WEF report then recommends expanding the scope of renewable energy sources and increasing public and private investment in clean energy. The World Economic Forum said it was disappointed that there are still significant financing gaps, particularly in emerging markets.
