Morocco Slips to 144th in Global Press Freedom Rankings, Study Finds

The level of press freedom has declined in Morocco, according to the "Freedom Press Index". This is revealed by a recent study.
Morocco ranks 144th in terms of press freedom according to the "Freedom Press Index". The study notes the ignorance of the progress made in simplifying access to information and the development of digital media, as well as the advances in strengthening press freedom. On the other hand, Morocco has made progress in respecting the rights and freedoms of minorities and equality between citizens in their relations with the administration, according to the "CEPII" index.
In 2021, Morocco ranked 142nd in the expression and accountability index. According to the Royal Institute for Strategic Studies, this index does not reflect the achievements outlined in the 2011 Constitution, mainly related to guaranteeing the fundamental rights of citizens and promoting freedom of expression. The kingdom, however, has improved its position in the democracy index, especially after the adoption of the 2011 constitution. It occupies the third position in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
The study also shows that Morocco’s spending in the education sector remains insufficient, particularly given the increase in the number of enrolled students. The primary enrollment rate is around 100%, according to the Royal Institute for Strategic Studies. This success is the result of the state’s efforts in investing in this sector and improving access to schools, particularly in rural areas.
