Morocco’s Single Women Population Soars to 8 Million, Challenging Social Norms

This is a phenomenon that persists and is taking on an alarming scale in Morocco for many years. The number of single women is estimated at around 8 million, according to figures just released by a British NGO.
According to "Family Optimize" cited by the newspaper Al Massae, 8 million Moroccan women of marriageable age are now single. The reasons are known, the daily recalls, which speaks of a desire of certain women to be financially autonomous and above all independent from their families.
The other side of the coin is the image of the single woman, which is very poorly perceived in Moroccan society in general. Furthermore, marriage is an achievement for many families, described as very conservative by the NGO.
This marriage crisis seems to be affecting many countries in the region. With a rate of 40% of single women, it is in the lower range as it is estimated at 42% in Egypt, 42% in Jordan and 52% in Algeria. Tunisia, on the other hand, according to the NGO, has one of the highest celibacy rates among Arab countries: 62%.
