Morocco’s Single Mothers Face Legal Hurdles: Advocates Push for Reform

The Insaf association continues its fight against the marginalization and discrimination of single mothers, calling on the legislator for a profound reform of the law.
To this end, a seminar is scheduled for Thursday, November 3 in Casablanca, on the theme "Single mothers, between the ambition of the rule of law and the expected Reform" in collaboration with the Swiss NGO CFD.
This meeting will be an opportunity for the associative actors to recall the inconsistency between the current laws and the rights of single mothers and their children. According to them, the revision of certain laws in Morocco is necessary in order to align them with the bitter reality and the lived experience of this vulnerable population, often criticized, judged, discriminated against and who must be protected.
According to the organization’s figures, more than 50,000 children are born out of wedlock in Morocco each year, of which more than 300 babies are found dead or abandoned. Faced with the socio-economic pressures encountered by this segment of society, the Insaf association has fully committed itself to ensuring that every woman and every child have their rights respected and to offer them a dignified and responsible environment.
"No mother wants to abandon her child, if she does it is because society makes her feel guilty and puts obstacles in the way of keeping it. If she abandons it, she can go back home and have a normal life... but if she finds support, then she keeps her child... that’s what we’re here for," explained the coordinator of an association in Tangier.
