Morocco’s Silent Epidemic: Viral Hepatitis Claims 10,000 Lives Annually, Affects 600,000

Silent, evolving without revealing symptoms, viral hepatitis affects more than 600,000 Moroccans. Each year, 10% of those affected die from complications of this pathology, despite the availability of treatments.
The statistics of the Ministry of Health show 600,000 cases of patients affected by the hepatitis B and C viruses. These figures continue to mask the extent of the disease, especially in the absence of early screening in remote regions.
This lack of screening distorts the actual data of the health authorities regarding the exact number of people affected by viral hepatitis B and C, and consequently the number of deaths from this disease.
According to Professor Jamil Driss, President of the "Sos Hepatitis" Association, in a statement to the daily Al Massae, this silent disease kills between 4% and 10% of people affected by viral hepatitis types B and C. In other words, almost 2.5% of Moroccans die annually from this pathology.
