Morocco Sentences Dog Meat Gang to 10 Years in Prison for Illegal Slaughter and Sale

The Attorney General at the Casablanca Court of Appeal has confirmed the 10-year prison sentence handed down at first instance against members of a gang guilty of clandestine slaughter, dog slaughter, distribution and sale of their meat.
The public prosecutor’s office stated that the gang, which consists of 7 people aged 30 to 50 and from the cities of Mohammedia, El Jadida and Khouribga, acted without any pity or morality, by hunting dogs, fattening them, slaughtering them before serving them to the Moroccan consumer.
On November 24, 2018, the services of the Royal Gendarmerie of the Chelalat center had succeeded in dismantling this network, and in seizing a Mercedes utility vehicle, 2 sick cows in agony, and several dogs, as well as instruments and knives used for slaughter.
Information received by the royal gendarmerie services reported the presence of individuals involved in clandestine activities in an isolated depot located in the Ouled Sidi Abdenbi douar. The search carried out on site allowed the royal gendarmerie services to arrest 3 members of the gang in the process of preparing meat of suspicious origin, and to confiscate 2 cows, a large quantity of meat intended for sale, a dog skeleton, an electric mincer, as well as other objects.
The investigation revealed that the suspects were buying sick cows and slaughtering dogs before selling them under the label of goat meat.
The accused also stated that they were preparing large quantities of minced meat and distributing it, using the utility vehicle, to several mobile fast food outlets in Casablanca and its region.
