Morocco Seizes Record 120 Tons of Cannabis in Six Months, Despite Pandemic

120 tons of cannabis resin were seized by the Moroccan security services between March and September 2020. The announcement was made by Abderrahim Habib, head of the central service for the fight against drug trafficking at the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN).
Despite the coronavirus pandemic, the seized quantity is up 50% compared to last year, when the security services seized only 80 tons of cannabis resin. In an interview published by Médias24, the head of the drug trafficking control service indicated that despite the restrictions imposed by the state of health emergency, the country’s security services seized 21 kg of cocaine in Nador.
Similarly, 25.6 kg of cocaine from a European country were intercepted on May 11 at the port of Tanger Med. "We reached a total of 72 kilos of cocaine" since the beginning of confinement in September, compared to barely 42 kg of cocaine seized during the same period in 2019, said Abderrahim Habib.
He also welcomed during the interview the success of the fight against drug trafficking in recent years thanks to the commitment and professionalism of the security services. "In reality, there is a double work because our security services have been engaged for several years in a sustainable process of collection, analysis and finally exploitation of criminal intelligence," the same source specifies.
