Morocco Sees Surge in Contactless Payments, Bank Card Usage Tops 18 Million

In Morocco, card payments have experienced sustained growth at the end of last September. This is evidenced by the indicators published by the Interbank Monetics Center (CMI).
With the health crisis related to the coronavirus, contactless payments have been more widely used by Moroccans. Thus, this increase is reflected in a contactless ratio of 32.5% in number and 15.7% in amount, compared to a rate of 9.2% in number and 3.7% in amount, during the same period in 2020.
In total, the number of bank cards issued by Moroccan issuers has exceeded the threshold of 18 million cards in circulation. Of this figure, 10 million cards have the contactless functionality.
Furthermore, prepaid cards, which represent an outstanding amount of 1.9 million cards, are divided into 65.3% of cards under the Visa label, 18.4% of cards under the Mastercard label and 16.2% of cards under the cmi label, the Center specifies.
