Morocco Sees Rise in Female-Led Households, Now 1 in 5 Nationwide

About one in five households in Morocco is now headed by a woman, according to the National Observatory of Human Development (ONDH).
In a report published on Thursday, the ONDH specifies that the proportion of urban households headed by a woman increased from 18.9% in 2012 to 21.3% in 2017, compared to 9.5% and 11.4% respectively in rural areas.
During the same period, there was a decrease in the average household size from 4.7 to 4.4 persons per household, a decrease accompanied by an increase in the weight of households headed by a woman.
For the Observatory, Morocco is distinguished by "an advanced demographic transition characterized by a decline in fertility and pronounced aging in the coming years". Thus, the demographic weight of the population under 15 years of age is decreasing (from 29% to 28.5%), while that of the population aged 60 and over continues to increase, from 9.8% to 10.8%.
