Morocco-Russia: a friendly match project under consideration
The Secretary General of the FRMF, Tarek Najem, mentioned the possibility of a friendly match between Morocco and Russia next June. The final decision belongs to the new coach, who is responsible for setting up the preparations for the 2026 World Cup.
Tarek Najem specified that the national team has not yet finalized the schedule for the friendly matches preceding the World Cup. This file remains pending the validation of the new technical staff, currently in the midst of a transition phase.
"If the Russian side is interested in organizing the match, I will convey this wish to the coach," Najem said. He stressed that the coach is the sole decision-maker capable of determining the appropriate opponents to refine the team’s preparation.
The Russian ambassador to Morocco is actively supporting this initiative. During an interview with the RIA Novosti agency, he estimated that such a confrontation, at the level of national teams or clubs, would considerably strengthen the sports ties between the two nations.
The diplomat also welcomed the meteoric rise of Moroccan football and its international influence. For Russia, facing a team occupying such an advanced position globally would be a major test, enhancing the expertise of Morocco, the future co-host of the 2030 World Cup.
