Morocco’s Ruling Party Proposes Delaying Elections to 2022, Sparking Controversy

The Party for Justice and Development (PJD) made a curious proposal during the consultations on the electoral law. The party of the lamp wishes to postpone the elections to February 2022, thus provoking the wrath of the opposition and the majority.
PJD members have argued for extending the mandate of the El Othmani government for an additional year. According to Assabah, this proposal, which has surprised more than one, including the Minister of the Interior, aims to play for time to escape the anger of the voters. For the opposition, it is a pretext to extend the mandate of Saâddedine El Othmani.
For their part, the hawks have warned against the "risks of targeting the party and the consequences this would have on the general situation of the country". They support their position by arguing that the party has no intention of increasing its popularity through its reforms and benefiting from it in the next elections.
The PJD, according to them, finds itself in the government for the same reasons that led it to support the State during the Hirak of February 20, 2011. "The contracts concluded after the demonstrations of February 20, 2011 have not been fully exploited. Because several of their provisions remain a dream to which the bigwigs who work, day and night, to circumvent them or at least reduce them to a pittance," they specify. They have also warned against the falsification of the will of the people which, according to them, would be disastrous for everyone.
