Morocco’s 5G Rollout Delayed as Fiber Optic Infrastructure Lags Behind

In Morocco, the launch of 5G is struggling to become a reality. And for good reason, the development of fiber optics is experiencing a huge delay.
While the note of general guidelines for the development of the telecommunications sector specifies that the launch of 5G in Morocco will be effective in 2023, analysts and observers are doubtful, as next year is already close. In a statement to the daily L’Économiste, an expert believes that the plan of the general guidelines note will not be able to achieve the set objectives. According to him, the real objective lies in the deployment of fiber (optic, editor’s note). This implies a deployment rate of 20% in 2023, or 2 million FTTH (Fiber to the home) connections, while only 450,000 connections have been made to date, analyzes the expert.

Achieving these objectives requires the pooling of operators’ efforts. "The objectives could have been achieved if the right decisions had been made, that is to open the market and the regulations in favor of infrastructure operators. And it is the latter who will ensure the pooling in coordination with the local authorities, the regions and the municipalities," specifies the expert. The opening of the market to dedicated infrastructure operators appears to be a solution to accelerate pooling and sharing. Global players such as the giant Google are just waiting to receive authorization from the regulator (National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency) to operate as infrastructure operators in order to invest.
