Morocco’s Road Safety Crisis: 3,384 Deaths in 2019 Despite Government Efforts

Despite the many efforts made by the government to reduce the number of road deaths, the toll is still as chaotic. There were 3,384 killed in 3,010 fatal accidents and 8,417 seriously injured in 2019.
The national road safety strategy aims to reduce the number of road deaths by 25% by 2021, and by 50% by 2026. But with the 2019 toll, Morocco is far from this dream. Road accidents result in an annual economic and material loss of nearly 2.5% of GDP.
The National Road Safety Day, celebrated every February, will be an opportunity to objectively assess the obstacles preventing the achievement of the expected results.
The analysis of the provisional statistics for the year 2019, compared to those of 2018, shows an increase of 6.87% in road accidents, which amounted to 102,737. Non-fatal accidents recorded an increase of 7.16%, reaching 99,727. As for the slightly injured, they are still numerous. Ministry statistics show an 8.57% increase in serious injuries, which stood at 139,246, reports aujourd’hui.ma.
It must be said that the year 2019 got off to a bad start, with a 15.45% increase in the number of people killed. During the first two months of the year, the number of people killed had recorded an increase of 9.45%. Thus, 533 people lost their lives on the roads. Accidents exploded by 18.99%, reaching 15,855.
